Today I was shown the sad sight of a Drake lying dead beside the river path. It appeared to have been killed - probably by a dog. Two days ago I saw a woman with a dog that was running loose that attacked the mother duck with the 4 surviving ducklings on the lower river. Luckily the mother duck led the dog upstream away from the ducklings and eventually saved them.
There are several people in the locality that have little regard for the river wildlife and allow their dogs to chase and occasionally kill ducks.
One dog owner in particular that lives around the harbour st area has a young Labrador dog that is often seen running amok along the riverside, should take proper control of his dog.
CAN I REMIND THOSE PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DOGS ACTIONS AND COULD BE PROSECUTED.
It would only take one irresponsible act by a dog owner to destroy the family unit of Nairn Swans. With that in mind, can I ask locals to keep a close eye on the Swans in the run up to this years hatching. The Police have assured me they will also be keeping an eye on the swans too.
time for people to stop feeding the ducks on the path? they are very vulnerable there
ReplyDeleteTime for people to keep their dogs under control and on lead, especially in that area and this time of year !
ReplyDeleteI think it is really good that you are doing what you can to protect the swans and the cygnets and to speak out about the fact that totally irresponsible dog owners are allowing their dogs to threaten and actually harm them. I hope you don't give up on this and get as much support as you can from whoever you can. Well done !
