Ducks Killed

Yet again irresponsible dog owners are allowing their dogs to kill nesting ducks on the riverside ! In spite of the fact that there are signs asking people to keep their dogs under close control, 2 female nesting ducks have been killed since yesterday !

The Trust spends all year caring for these birds, getting them into prime condition to nest - only to be killed when they try to do so. It is a Wildlife crime and offence to kill nesting birds !

Hatch Failure - Investigation Underway

With a Heavy Heart I have to tell everyone the cygnet hatch which we have all been waiting for, has not happened. The result seems to be identical to 2017 when we had total failure to hatch as well.
This is too much of a coincidence, the Trust has launched an Investigation and analysis, in coordination with the Scottish SPCA.
Penny and Duke have been in perfect health and successfully reared 7 cygnets for 9 months last year.
I know the whole town barring a few will be disappointed, as many have been anxiously awaiting the hatch.
Sadly under SNH license I have removed the eggs from the nest, as Penny would continue to sit and try to hatch them. This would lead to her suffering ill health which I cannot allow to happen.
Needless to say I am devastated for her and Duke, who have been exemplary parents.
The investigation will be thorough, and may also involve the wildlife crime officers.

Wildlife Crime !

PIGEON UPDATE! The ID number on the pigeon is NE3856SU14.

In the space of 18 hours I was contacted by two Nairn residents reporting 2 injured birds. One of these was a Herring gull found in Gordon street, and the other was a homing Pigeon found in Douglas street. Both had been shot ! The Police have been informed as well as the Scottish SPCA who took the gull away.

The pigeon I took to the Vet to see if it could be saved, unfortunately the injuries were too severe and it had to be put to sleep. Perhaps the owner might recognise the rings on the pigeon, a green one on the right leg and a yellow one on the left.
It seems we have a shooter in the town, now hunted by both the Police and the SPCA.
These birds are innocent creatures and have as much right to be on the Planet as the rest of us, the River Nairn Swans and Waterfowl Trust will not tolerate the senseless killing of birds and will assist the Police and SPCA whenever we can.YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !
