Cygnets Take The Hint

As predicted, the cygnets appear to have taken the hint and leave the river  - all but one !
After several weeks being hassled,
the settled spring like weather was the catalyst for Popeye and Penny to give them the final push - The world is now their oyster !

In Good Order

The Swans are now having flying lessons from Penny, September is training time for the Cygnets with almost daily trips to the sea, where there are no obstructions and open vista's to hone their flying skills.

They are in good order in every sense of the word !

The Ducklings at home are also in good fettle and it's nice to have them as a welcoming committee when I return from the river.
Also in good order is news that the Nairn south development appeal has been thrown out and rightly so, after fierce opposition by local resident campaigners, WELL DONE TO THEM

Fabulous Flight !

Cygnets are still here, although frequently on their own and at sea.

Parents still tolerating they're presence and have them under total control.

Again I was ideally placed to get a few nice shots as they flew towards the Merryton Bridge.

They are becoming competent fliers, even in blustery conditions

Going.....Going.....

Briefly thought  that the cygnets had finally gone today, with Popeye and Penny happily on their own at the Bridge.

Was just about to head down to the harbour to see if the cygnets were there, when they suddenly appeared. They flew low up river to the bridge, very wary of the parents and rightly so, Popeye and Penny are increasing the pressure for them to leave.

The Winter has just not materialised locally, and I cant remember a year so mild. This has been good for the birds because the ground has never been frozen at all this winter. We have certainly got our share of global warming this year !

Cygnet Flywalkers

Breezy conditions allowed some of the cygnets to fly / walk up river earlier today. They got left behind in the Harbour  while the rest of the family were enjoying a feed at the island. With low water and tide out, they could not wait for the long walk upstream and used the headwind to flywalk to lunch ! They will take to the skies before too long.

Bridge Silver Lining

Councillor Liz MacDonald informs me that BEAR Scotland will be painting the River Nairn Road bridge railings during September. This is welcome news since I informed BEAR that the Cygnets will be learning to fly during September, and I wish to reduce the chances of an accident on the bridge. Earlier this year there was a near fatal collision with the bridge railings, and It was obvious to me that the Swans only saw the railings at the last moment. The railings will be painted Silver as requested, hopefully reducing the chances of a collision - as well as sprucing up the Town a little!
