Limpy and Disco

Having endured the winter together, my 2 disabled ducks Disco and Limpy are beginning to take a closer interest in each other.

Although Disco the female has not been too keen on Limpy because he has one deformed leg.

When he flew into the pond today showing that he can fly and she cant, this seemed to change her attitude quite a bit.

They circled around one another and she stretched her neck, as he did a few bobs of the head.

This was the outcome I was hoping for. It would be great if they can mate and have a brood together later in the spring - watch this space !

Spring Tide

The first Spring Tide of the New Year has just passed, with a deep low pressure over the North sea it pushed the level almost to the top of the Swans Island. However we are getting off lightly compared to the rest of the country and across the pond, it has been positively balmy !

I took the opportunity to empty and refresh the garden pond for Disco and Limpy, getting rid of the decayed leaves and dirt.

Both of them could not wait, and plunged in well before it was half full. Limpy could not get enough of the fresh water and kept sticking his head into the hose pipe flow. Both are disabled, but they sure enjoy life to the full.

Meanwhile down on the river, the seal is still using the high tides to do some fishing along with the red breasted merganser.

Disabled Duo

Disco and Limpy the two disabled ducks are slowly getting closer.

However Disco is still not 100% accepting of Limpy, who has only one good leg. He is getting more mature looking and can pretty much do everything - other than walk on two legs. I am still hopeful they will be able to mate in the spring !

These two would not survive in the wild, so the Trust has given them a life together in the safety and comfort of a sanctuary.

Meanwhile on the river, the swans have gone for a winter vacation, who can blame them with a bone chilling northerly wind blowing upstream !  Again, I'm sure they'll be back well before nesting time.

Limpy and Disco

My two disabled ducks are gradually getting used to each other, although disco is still showing she's the boss.

However Limpy is still a baby, just coming up to 3 months old. I think once he gets his male colours and a bit bigger she will be more accepting of him, especially when spring arrives !

Meanwhile when together in the pool they get on great and do a bit of diving together. Limpy's gammy leg is no hindrance in the water, and he can now use his wings to give himself a lift when required.

Having had this impediment since a small duckling he has adapted and managed OK on one leg.

Short clip below showing how Disco still rules the roost !
