Ship To Ship Lose Battle !

Good News for all the campaigners against the ship to ship oil transfers. Cromarty Rising website gives details on the latest news. Maritime Coastguard Agency has told Cromarty Port Authority to scrap their current S2S application ! Well done to all the people power throughout the region, who did their bit for the wildlife and our planet.

Cromarty port authority might still continue after Easter, but if they were wise, they would not waste their time and money taking us on again.

Defending The Environment

The Nairn Beach Demonstration today was a huge success with over 500 people out to defend the Moray firth  environment.

The organisers Cromarty Rising were well pleased with the Nairn people's turnout and it made for an impressive line up along the beach.

Interestingly this beach was used for the D - Day training landings during World War 2 , Let's hope this war against the Ship to Ship oil transfers is also won !

There are so many downsides to this idea that it's hard to believe that they could get the go ahead.

However we must all do our utmost to stop this dangerous scheme before it ever starts !  I have already written to our Local MP voicing the opposition of our 170 Members of the Trust.

We have a direct interest in stopping this proposal, since our Swans and cygnets spend a lot of time feeding on the seaweed along this shore line, along with Brent geese and other sea birds.

This environment is way more important than extra oil bucks for Cromarty port authority.

Selection of photos of the demo today, some were suitably dressed for the occasion too !

NO SHIP TO SHIP OIL TRANSFERS

The River Nairn Swans and Waterfowl Trust is opposed to the Cromarty Port Authority plans for Ship to Ship oil Transfers in the Moray Firth.

This would be directly opposite Nairn causing pollution and an ever present danger to our coastline. Most locals will know that during the Summer the breeze comes across from Cromarty and carries diesel fumes and Noise from the ships anchored outside the Cromarty entrance. If the Cromarty Port Authority get their way, there will be a huge increase in anchored shipping and the additional threat pumping oil from one ship to another.

The polluted ballast from their tanks will also create more pollution threats.

The last thing Nairn needs is contaminated beaches which already suffer from sewage pollution right now ! There will be a public meeting this Friday at 7pm in the Community centre, we would urge as many people as possible to attend and show your support for the organisations opposing this plan.

United Against Ship to Ship Oil Transfers

I am pleased to see the RSPB have also come out against the proposed Ship to Ship oil Transfers in the Cromarty and Moray Firth. From what I can see there is widespread and local opposition, and rightly so.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency ( MCA ) are likely to be bombarded by plea's and petitions, from every section of the highland community, in favour of the natural world and our local wildlife.

The last thing we want are images of birds on our beaches like the ones shown here !

NO SHIP TO SHIP OIL TRANSFERS !

The proposal to increase ship to ship oil transfers in the Cromarty Firth gets a resounding NO from the River Nairn Swans and Waterfowl Trust. The Moray Firth is a narrow stretch of water and any accidental spill would be a calamity for the area. The Marine and coastal environment is precious and needs protection at all times. On behalf of our 159 members I have signed the online petition launched by the petition site.

The past couple of weeks produced many exhausted seabirds washed up on the shores of the entire firth due to weather and tidal conditions, just imagine if an oil spill occurred during this time as well. I hope our local and regional councillors will also voice their official opposition to this proposal ! Anyone wishing to sign the online petition can do so HERE.
