Dragon Fly

Surprising visitor on this chilly blustery day, with leaves falling and sudden gusts - a Dragon fly dropped into the garden.

Have seen this species before, but usually during the Summer weather.

Tried taking some Macro shots as it rested on the side of the aviary.

The true beauty of these flyers can be seen in the close detail.

Species may be an Emperor, or Southern hawker, maybe someone can tell me ?

UPDATE: My thanks to Trust Member Isobel, confirming that it is indeed a Southern Hawker.

Summers End ?

Our Summer has been pretty poor and Autumn is now under way with the leaves turning. My hopes of an Indian Summer are still there for October, but if September is anything to go by !

Have seen very few butterflies this year, but today had a double treat.

With a red Admiral down by the riverside, and a Dragon fly by my garden pond, hope still for an Indian Summer ?

Wildlife Photo Competition

Just a reminder to all the young wildlife photographers out there aged 8 to 15, about the River Nairn Swans and Waterfowl Trust Wildlife Photo Competition. Spring to Summer will present many opportunities to take nice photos, it could be an insect, a bird, an animal - any local wildlife at all.

Here are some of the photos I've taken locally of smaller wildlife, but beautiful just the same.

You can enter up to 3 photo's on just one entry form which can be downloaded HERE.
